The tl;dr is that if you sell any digital goods to anyone in the EU, you need a VAT and to pay taxes. Yaaay. You will have to register VAT in every country you sell to, since there’s no minimum threshold of sales, file things very differently, keep records for 10 years, and all this is untenable and unsustainable me when you realize I make maybe $50 from EU sales a year. It would cost me more to be compliant than I would make.
Here are some helpful links to assist you in determining what you should do about it, if you run a store.
At this point, it’s not worth the risk for me to not be compliant. Your options if you use EDD?
- VAT for EDD by Lyquidity – If you’re going to keep selling to the EU, use this plugin
- EDD – Prevent EU Checkout – This prevents purchases from anyone from the EU
I wrote the prevent checkout plugin, and I hate that I did it.
