What is this?
I’m known as the ‘Half-Elf Support Rogue’ in the WordPress community, following a silly comment made on Twitter in 2010. The name stuck.
Didn’t these books used to be free?
They’ve always been Pay What You Want. You just have to use a coupon to get them for free now.
Where do I get a coupon?
Read the Coupon Page.
You’re crazy! Why would you let people download books for free!?
Because I hate DRM and I think the problem’s not theft, but obscurity. Read my ebook philosophy if you really want to understand more.
Then why a coupon? Why not just free?
Because I do want to encourage people to put value on what they get. “What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value.” and all that jazz Thomas Paine says.
Why not make the coupons more obvious?
70% of people use a coupon. I think it’s fine. And if they miss it, well, my wife called it the RTFM tax. Also I spent a lot of time talking to business people recently, who all said if my rate of return was that high, then people did want to pay, so I should encourage that.
What’s the blog part for?
Announcing new books, short essays on ebooks and selling. That sort of thing.
Why are there ads?
Same reason the books are for sale. To earn money to pay for webhosting.
How much do you make?
Not much! Around $15 a month.
Do you sell on Amazon or iBooks?
Yes, but due to restrictions, I can’t give the books away as an option. Sorry, they don’t allow 100% discounts unless I only sell on their stores and use DRM.
How come you stopped selling to the EU?
You’re not funny.
That wasn’t a question.
Isn’t everything in the books on your blog?
Actually no. Much of this, yes, but not all.
Why should I pay for this? I could look it up all myself!
Go for it. But if you’d rather just have it handy, I think paying for the convenience is polite.
Okay, I agree I should pay, but the price is too high. Cut me a deal?
Use the discount code that gives you half off.
I want to pay, and I think you value yourself too cheap! Can I pay you more?
Sure! There’s a code called
DOUBLE and it doubles what you pay.
Where can I send corrections?
Use the contact form.
Will you write about this other idea I have?
Maybe. Drop me a line.
